The contents of the “Weekly Feature” page are provided
to you for your entertainment, amusement, and perhaps information.
Here you may find articles of interest, pictures, historical information
on the Club, or whatever shuffles to the top of the pile on our
desk. The only defined characteristic of this space is that we
will make every effort to change/replace it around the middle of
each week. Thank you for visiting, and please stop by again. Click

The
End of September; Part II
Last week’s Feature Page dealt with the Educations Days portion
of our big 3 day extravaganza, which was the Friday story, this week
we’ll try to cover the Saturday and Sunday activities. Things
always seem to get a bit more concentrated at the Showgrounds as we
enter the September period. We sense the approaching end of our outdoor
event season, and the inevitable winter that will follow. Neither is
a cause for rejoicing at this outpost.
However, in the immortal words of Yankee great, Yogi
Berra, “It
ain’t over, ‘till it’s over!” And thus we are
left with the task of reporting on the rest of the story.
On Saturday, Sept. 27th, we hosted a Dead Boat tractor
pull, which was enjoyed by nearly 70 participants, and even included
a Steel Wheel
class. Track conditions were at their peak, and percentage numbers
came in at or above record levels. At the end of the day, a special
charity event was also added, as we sponsored a $10 per hook Tractor/Truck
pull, with all proceeds going toward our ongoing support of the local
DARE Program. Just like a NASCAR crowd, spectators took particular
delight in the mechanical carnage that often accompanies such competitions.
The more bent, twisted, and broken parts that came spewing out from
beneath the screaming trucks, the louder the cheers! One particular
crowd favorite was an ungainly looking refugee from the scrap-yard
dubbed the “Vamper”. Part “Van”, part “Camper”,
and all junk, the graffiti covered contraption soon became the popular
underdog that everybody wanted to root for. Speculation ran wild about
whether it would run long enough to make it onto the track, let alone
hook to the sled. But the gods of nuts and bolts saw fit to allow the
venerable RV one last moment of glory that night, and with a mighty
roar the “Vamper” came to life and charged down the track
at full throttle, shedding accessories and billowing smoke, until the
many occupants had to bail out for a breath of fresh air. What a sight,
and what fun !
As is often the case here at the MMOGTA, “Fun” is often
a big part of “Funding”, as all the proceeds from the $10
per hook, along with the donation jar at the potluck dinner buffet
allowed us to provide a nearly $1000 contribution to the local DARE
Program. A job well done!
The 3rd and final day of the busy weekend was set
aside for the final T-Sled points pull of the 2008 season. With a great
track, and all
the marbles on the line for the year, we had some 172 hooks to end
our season on the clay. We certainly thank all the dedicated guys
and gals who worked so hard to make this a memorable weekend. Enjoy
the
photos below. (all from Saturday)
