The contents of the “Weekly Feature” page are provided
to you for your entertainment, amusement, and perhaps information.
Here you may find articles of interest, pictures, historical information
on the Club, or whatever shuffles to the top of the pile on our
desk. The only defined characteristic of this space is that we
will make every effort to change/replace it around the middle of
each week. Thank you for visiting, and please stop by again. Click

Education
Days 2008
The last weekend of September was indeed a busy one
at the MMOGTA Showgrounds, with 3 big days of activities to keep us
all occupied, too much to
fit in one Weekly Feature exercise. Given those limitations, we’ll
start with Friday’s outstanding success with our 2nd annual Education
Days program. For those unfamiliar, the background is this; we set
up the Showgrounds with more than a dozen different interactive display
stations where 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students from area schools visit
us on a field trip to learn about many different aspects of rural life
in the earlier part of the last century. As the kids were shuttled
around the grounds they were given the opportunity to witness and learn
about dairy cattle, shingle and veneer production, rock crushing, tin-smithing,
blacksmithing, bee-keeping, wool spinning, quilting, saw milling, threshing,
flour milling, candle making, rope making, tractor driving, and molasses
production. At each stop, the kids were given some instruction on the
process at hand and, in many cases, the opportunity to participate
and take away souvenirs from the various stations.
Nearly 500 students, along with their chaperones
and teachers, were treated to a free lunch at mid-day, as they enjoyed
a picture perfect
day of activities on the sun drenched showgrounds. Many of our guests
found a few free moments to enjoy our playground equipment as well,
after all, what’s a school day without a recess?
Our guests included public, parochial, and home schooled
kids, and at the end of the day they were dusty, tired, and grinning
from ear to ear
when they were loaded back on their busses. They left with some souvenirs,
some great memories, and hopefully a little new insight on some of
the life experiences their grandpas’ have been trying to tell
them about.
From our perspective, it was a very gratifying experience
to see so many youngsters so eager and enthusiastic to be a part of
what we all
enjoy. We leave you with our profound thanks to all who participated,
donated, and helped, and hope you enjoy the photos below.
