MILL BARN LAST UPDATED
FEBRUARY 26, 2016

The L. A. Haak Memorial Building is named after one of our club founders.  Also called the Mill Barn, it is  home to our shingle mill, veneer mill and gang saw.  During the annual show we also demonstrate some old "drag saws" on the north side of the building.

SHINGLE MILL

A lot of shingles have been made on this old belt driven shingle mill.  Normally sawed from cedar the shingles are resistant to deterioration from wet weather and insects.  The edger cuts a nice straight edge on the shingles so they fit close together.  We brand a tractor logo on the shingles in our blacksmith shop and offer them as souveniers.

VEENER MILL

The Veener Mill was purchased in New York State by the club in 1982 and relocated to the showgrounds.  The machine was manufactured in the early 1900's.  It's belt driven by a tractor parked outside of the building.  A lot of work has went into repairing and refurbishing various parts of the old machine and it slices off nice sheets of veener.  We usually use cotton wood as it cuts easily and puts less strain on the old parts than a harder wood like maple or oak.

GANG SAW

The Castle Museum in Saginaw, Michigan obtained this great piece of Michigan history and offered to let MMOGTA set it up and operate it on our showgrounds.  Made in Saginaw by Wickes Brothers in 1913, this artifact of  logging history is an example of the technology utilized by the the early lumber industry.

DRAG SAWS

Between the human powered crosscut saws and the todays modern chain saws there were several companies that manufactured drag saws.
Some like Appleton and Ottawa saws below were powered by an external engine while others were manufactured with self contained motors.
