OPENING DAY, 2013
At long last, the 2013 Opening Day for tractor pulling
at famed MMOGTA Showgrounds has been put into the history books. Delayed
for a month by stubbornly persistent
winter-like weather, the eagerly awaited event took place on May 18th and 19th
. As much as we enjoy and anticipate getting back to having fun on the tracks,
we recognize that this is, after all, a recreational pursuit, and as such,
it takes second place when compared to the real life business of farming
in general.
Many of our participants are involved in that, as well, and with the late start
to the season, planting takes priority over all else. We are all pleased to
get back to business on all fronts, and look forward to the 2013 MMOGTA
season, our
39th, with a great deal of excitement.
The longer we have to wait for spring, the sweeter it
seems when we finally get to enjoy the softer air, scented as it is
with the lilac and apple blossom
fragrance,
and decorated with the blooms of every description and color. But it’s
more than just the natural beauty that adds to the atmosphere of our first outing
at the Showgrounds, it’s the chance to catch up with old friends, see the
new hardware, see how much the kids have grown, and catch up on all the new gossip
we have missed over the 6 month dormant period. It’s the chance to smell
the dirt from the track, and the exotic fuels from the pits. And who hasn’t
missed the welcoming aromas of our favorite menu items wafting from the Franfoods
crew in the club kitchen? No matter how many times we have revisited the occasion,
Opening Day always has a special feel for those of us who still enjoy the “Roar
of the Tractors…”. It’s good to be back !
As a postscript, I feel obligated to post an apology
to those who may regularly visit our website…..we are painfully aware that we have been derelict in
our duties here, and hope to improve our performance in the future. “Hope
springs eternal”, they say, and we trust that impending changes in
our situation will put legs on that theory.
We leave you with some random pics from the weekend,
(sadly, I had forgotten the camera on Saturday, so no pics from the
dead weight pull) including
a memorable shot of one of our much younger fellow members driving in
her first
tractor
pull on the date of her 7th birthday. Congrats, and Happy Birthday, Sydney
! It is
this kind of family oriented fun that has allowed our group to grow,
prosper, and build upon the core of continuity over almost 4 decades.
Building memories
takes time, but it’s time well spent.
