The contents of the “Weekly Feature” page are provided to you for your entertainment, amusement, and perhaps information. Here you may find articles of interest, pictures, historical information on the Club, or whatever shuffles to the top of the pile on our desk. The only defined characteristic of this space is that we will make every effort to change/replace it around the middle of each week. Thank you for visiting, and please stop by again.

Kid Stuff

This week we take a look at our master plan to perpetuate our organization and, in a larger sense, our hobby, by creating an entertaining environment for all the kids that visit our show each year. Those of us who have spent decades in the Club have also had the opportunity to watch our kids grow up right along with it. Time flies, they say, and it’s never more evident than when one looks back at the past. The first few years we had to carry or wheel them around the grounds. Startled ears would have to be shielded when the steam whistles blew or a loud tractor started nearby. Then there were the stages where we’d have to pick them up and shake the dirt and chaff out of their pockets. We learned that the amount of debris they could attach to themselves was directly proportional to the amount of cotton candy they had been served and the amount of rain in the week preceding the show. There were endless requests for more dollar bills to purchase trinkets from the Flea Markets and concessions. There were all those free puppies and kittens from the Petting Zoo that just had to follow us home. Then it was “Take me for a tractor ride, Dad”, followed closely by, “I can drive it myself, Dad”, and “I want my own”. It’s easy to see the natural progression of it all. It went from “Keep those kids out of the way”, to, “Send some of those young guys over here, this is hard work”.

The plan has always been to bring them right along with us through our history as a club, and to that end we have developed a broad range of activities that keep them on board. Most start out digging in the sand on the Playground. Their first official activity might be in the Pedal Tractor pull, and then in a couple of years they might be seen in the Garden Tractor Pull. As they grow, it’s on to the Junior Pull, and all the rest of the field activities. Along the way they may be involved with Boy Scout campouts, candle-making and other Arts and Crafts demonstrations, Petting Zoo displays, etc. Current plans even include an early Autumn Field Days weekend at the Showgrounds that will bring local school kids to our facilities for educational tours. Let’s face it, they won’t see this stuff on MTV or at the mall. For a few representative pictures, see below. Click photos to enlarge.
