Mid
Michigan Old Gas Tractor Assn. Christmas News
Members and friends of the MMOGTA gathered on December
13th for their final meeting of the 2008 season. The evening included
a potluck dinner,
the seasonal tractor pulling awards, a blind auction fund raiser, and
a visit from Santa for the youngsters in the group.
As is their custom, the MMOGTA, an Oakley based,
non-profit organization, used this occasion as an opportunity to give
back to the community
that supports them throughout the year. The first beneficiary of the
successful season was the Johnny Burke (Oldies 96 Radio personality)
Children’s fund, which received a check for $1200, the proceeds
from the Bean Soup sales at the August tractor show. The popular DJ
was present in person to accept the donation and express his sincere
gratitude.
Also on the Christmas agenda was our annual donation
to the area DARE Program, an anti-drug education project which targets
local Middle
School or Elementary School students. Officer Bruce Andres of the New
Lothrop Police Dept. was on hand to accept the $1200 check which represented
the proceeds from the tractor and truck pull that took place during
our Education Days Weekend in September. The donation also included
funds generated by a charity Hog Roast the same weekend, as well as
the proceeds from the Owosso Argus Press “Tractor Days” photo
project.
Mindful of the old adage, “Charity begins at home”, MMOGTA
selected a well known local facility that provides food assistance
to the needy as their final beneficiary for the Christmas gifting season.
Member Darrell Wilcoxson provided an enclosed trailer to accept all
food donations, which were then transported to the Compassionate Ministries
Food Bank, a function of the Oakley Community Church. In addition to
the donated food, an area farmer offered a whole Beef to the effort
at a bargain price, which was paid by generous attendees at the party.
Some $470 was collected in the form of outright donations and the raffle
sale of a collector’s toy tractor, which was donated by S+K Farm
and Yard of Owosso, won by member Darryl Keeler, donated back, and
resold at the auction. Nixon’s Grocery in Brant has offered to
provide the processing of the Beef.
The Board of Directors, along with the membership
of the Mid Michigan Old Gas Tractor Association wishes to extend their
sincere gratitude
to all of our community-minded fellow members, friends, and neighbors,
who have made these donations possible by their generous support
of our events throughout the 2008 season. Merry Christmas and Happy
New
Year from all of us at MMOGTA.
