The contents of the “Weekly Feature” page are provided to you for your entertainment, amusement, and perhaps information. Here you may find articles of interest, pictures, historical information on the Club, or whatever shuffles to the top of the pile on our desk. The only defined characteristic of this space is that we will make every effort to change/replace it around the middle of each week. Thank you for visiting, and please stop by again. First Annual Tractor Safari

Planning an outdoor event in Michigan is always a bit of a gamble, and planning one in October, as a rule, stacks the deck against you. However, once in a while all the forces of the universe align in your favor, making all the planners look good and all the participants look happy.

Such was the case on the occasion of October 17, when the Aldrich family scheduled their first “Tractor Safari”, a leisurely ride from their farm west of Owosso to the remote Village of Laingsburg and back, a journey of about 25 mi. The weather was sunny and in the low 70’s, the route carefully chosen to include almost no traffic, the Autumn foliage was at it’s peak of color, and the terrain was varied and scenic. From rolling country backroads and isolated trails through wooded areas, to well manicured, small town subdivisions, the total experience was that of a tour through rural Americana.

Most of us in the antique tractor hobby are eager to find reasons (excuses) to use our prized old iron, and this is certainly among the best outlets for that pent-up urge. While at a typical tractor pull, one might get a few minutes of working seat time, the smiling participants in this event spent over 3 hours at the wheel. I think it’s clear why these tours are becoming so popular. Think of a tractor pull where it’s your turn all day, there are no trophies, no entry fees, no loading suitcase weights, no arguing over rule infractions, and no waiting in line. Where’s the downside?

Bottom line, it was a very enjoyable way to close out the 2007 activity season, and we owe a tip of the MMOGTA hat to Jim and Diane for providing the opportunity.
