Gearheads and Shiny Stuff

Some of the Weekly Feature staffers at the lower pay grades had the opportunity to visit the Annual new product Auto Show last weekend at Northwood University in Midland. Billed as the largest outdoor show of its type in the Nation, and staged as it is all around the tree-lined campus, the Fall colors and a beautiful Autumn day made the trip a very pleasant experience.

While much of the product and many of the manufacturers represented there would best be described as “high-end”, the total effect was still not lost on our relatively “low-end” observers. The dress code memo was apparently not distributed democratically, thus the neckties and briefcases far outnumbered the John Deere hats and work boots, but a good observer must be able to adapt and adjust if he hopes to become “imbedded” in a good story.

While this all may seem a bit off topic for those in our hobby, the common thread here is just under the surface, the innate male attraction to shiny stuff, moving parts and loud exhaust noises, whatever their source.
